Most everyday percentage problems fall into a small number of categories. Identifying the category first is often more important than doing the arithmetic. If you choose the wrong relationship between the numbers, a perfectly executed calculation can still produce the wrong answer.

Notice that the original value plays a particularly important role in change calculations. Moving from 50 to 100 is a 100% increase because the gain of 50 equals the entire starting value. Moving from 100 to 150 is only a 50% increase even though the raw increase is also 50.
Find a Percentage of a Number
The most familiar percentage question asks for a portion of an amount. If a store offers 25% off a $240 product, you need to know what 25% of 240 equals. Convert the percentage into its decimal form and multiply it by the original number.
Example: 25% of 240 = 0.25 × 240 = 60. The discount amount is $60. If you also want the final sale price, subtract the discount from the original price: $240 − $60 = $180.
The same method works with much larger or smaller numbers. You might calculate 12% of a marketing budget, 7.5% of an invoice, 40% of a class, or 3% of monthly revenue. The context changes, but the underlying relationship remains the same.

Find What Percentage One Number Is of Another
Sometimes you already know the part and the total but need to discover the percentage. Suppose 84 customers out of 600 completed a particular action. Instead of asking for 14% of 600, you are starting with 84 and asking what proportion it represents.
Divide the part by the whole and multiply the result by 100. In this example, 84 ÷ 600 equals 0.14, which becomes 14%. This calculation appears constantly in conversion rates, survey results, task completion, attendance, customer response rates, marketing reports, and performance analysis.
Always identify the correct denominator—the number representing the relevant whole. If 84 people purchased from 600 website visitors, the denominator is 600 when calculating visitor-to-purchase conversion. Calculate Percentage Increase
Percentage increase measures how large a gain is relative to where you started. First find the difference between the new value and the original value. Then divide that difference by the original value and multiply by 100.
Suppose monthly orders increase from 800 to 1,000. The raw increase is 200. Dividing 200 by the original 800 gives 0.25, meaning the increase is 25%. Saying “orders increased by 200” describes the raw difference; saying “orders increased by 25%” describes the scale of that difference relative to the starting point.
This distinction becomes essential when comparing projects of different sizes. A company gaining 200 orders from a base of 800 has grown much faster proportionally than a company gaining the same 200 orders from a base of 20,000.
Percentage increase can therefore make comparison fairer when the starting values are different, but it should still be shown alongside the actual numbers whenever scale matters.
Calculate Percentage Decrease and Discounts
Percentage decrease follows a similar process, except the new value is lower than the original. Find how much the value fell, divide that decrease by the starting value, and convert the result into a percentage.
If a monthly expense falls from $1,250 to $1,000, the decrease is $250. Dividing 250 by 1,250 gives 0.20, so the expense decreased by 20%. The denominator remains the original $1,250 because the question asks how much the original amount changed.
Discount calculations use the same concept. A 30% discount does not mean the final price is 30% of the original. It means 30% is removed, leaving 70% of the original price. This difference becomes especially important when working quickly with sales and promotional pricing.

Some percentage problems begin with the final value instead of the original one. Imagine a product costs $80 after a 20% discount and you want to know its original price. You cannot simply add 20% of $80 because the original discount was calculated from a different, larger value.
After a 20% reduction, the final amount represents 80% of the original. Divide $80 by 0.80 and you get the original price of $100.
Reverse percentage rule: When you know the final value, first determine what percentage of the original remains. A 15% discount leaves 85%; a 25% increase produces 125% of the original.
The same principle works with increases. If a value is $150 after increasing by 25%, then $150 represents 125% of the starting value. Dividing 150 by 1.25 gives an original value of $120.

Two percentage changes applied one after another usually cannot be added or subtracted directly because the second percentage is calculated from a new base. This creates results that often surprise people.
Suppose a price of $100 increases by 20%. It becomes $120. If it then decreases by 20%, the reduction is calculated from $120, not the original $100. Twenty percent of $120 is $24, so the final value is $96 rather than $100.

Taxes are a familiar percentage application because a rate is applied to a taxable amount. Percentage points and percentage change are related terms, but they do not mean the same thing. Imagine a conversion rate rises from 20% to 25%. The difference between the two rates is 5 percentage points.
The relative percentage increase is different. The rate increased by 5 compared with an original rate of 20. Dividing 5 by 20 shows that the conversion rate increased by 25% relative to its starting level.
